About Surface Lasers
At the Austin Vein Institute, we utilize surface lasers (532nm KTP laser and 1064nm Nd: YAG laser) to treat men and women with tiny spider veins. Red and/or purple blood vessels that have become twisted or dilated often turn into unattractive spider veins on the legs and face. The challenge with surface lasers for spider veins in the legs is the very high pressure it puts on these veins. An intensive heat from the laser causes the vein to fail and collapse. Our double board-certified vascular surgeon Dr. Christopher Brennig will provide surface laser treatments to patients but believes that sometimes a surface laser treatment is not very effective and can cause discomfort and have a slower recovery period. While most vascular surgeons will rely primarily on modern sclerotherapy techniques, Dr. Brennig will treat tiny spider veins with laser therapy (especially if your veins are too little to treat with sclerotherapy). In some cases, Dr. Brennig will propose a combination of techniques for an optimal outcome.
"Dr. Brennig reminds me of my doctors while growing up. He gives you his time, undivided attention and a deep sense of actually caring about you. It’s a rare (but often missing!) trait."- W. / Healthgrades / May 06, 2021
"I inherited a severe case of varicose veins. Additionally, my veins were creating issues in my lower extremities that required attention. Could not have waited. Dr. Brennig and his staff determined my need and preceded to get things back to "ship shape" . Dr. Brennig is one of the coolest doctors I know. Very professional, very friendly chairside manner. And actually spends the time with you to put you at ease and to let you know exactly what you're looking at. He may even convince me to quit smoking. We're working on it. The vein institute, Dr Brennig and staff are tops !⚕️ Dr. Brennig is also the recipient of the Austin monthly doctor of the year award three years in a row. Congratulations doctor !"- S.J. / Google / Oct 30, 2020

"True, it's hard to find such a professional office (everyone working there), but combine that with the calm, compassionate treatment and you have one in a million! I am on more third round of vein treatment, and this experience stands out by leaps and bounds. But most meaningful to me was when I went in with an injury that involved my veins and more. Dr. Brennig was very thorough and methodical in the treatment, which will result in a more complete healing! He is what a doctor should be...and his office is what an office should be!"- C.D. / Google / Dec 06, 2019
"Dr. Brenning is awesome, and the work he does is life-changing! I've suffered from vericose veins for years and never took care of them because I thought that was being vain. Then the pain and discomfort got so bad that I sought out treatment. Dr. Brennig taught me why I was having the pain and swelling and put me on a treatment plan to relief me from all of it! After my first treatment, I felt better almost instantly. It was so worth it!! And the cosmetic benefits for me were just a side-benefit, but those are nice too. I recently bought shorts for the first time in years! I would recommend Dr. Brenning to anyone suffering from vericose veins... but more importantly, I'd recommend him to those folks that are not yet suffering and his treatments can help you avoid future pain."- L.C. / Google / Oct 03, 2019
If you are eligible for surface laser treatments, you will meet the following criteria:
- You wish to have treatment for visible spider veins in small sections on your face or legs
- You are not pregnant or planning to become pregnant during your treatment days
- You are not taking retinoid medications like Accutane for cystic acne
- You do not have an allergy or will not negative reaction to the exposure of light on your skin
- You do not have a pacemaker or other implanted medical device in your body
In one of our comfortable treatment rooms at AVI, our medical team will prepare you for your surface laser treatment. Dr. Brennig will administer a topical numbing cream to the treatment area if one is desired. We will ask you to wear protective eyewear to shield your eyes from the laser's bright light. Then, Dr. Brennig will pass the hand-piece over the spider veins. Once the spider veins absorb the energy from the laser, the veins will collapse. Your skin will appear smoother but may take some time for you to see your final results.
After your surface laser treatment, Dr. Brennig will send you home with detailed instructions on how to care for your skin. You may want to be prepared to have a few ice packs or an over-the-counter pain reliever on hand to help with the discomfort. He may also recommend that you wear compression socks or support hosiery for a week or more. Please keep all your follow-up appointments so that Dr. Brennig can monitor your progress. It is possible to need more than one treatment for stubborn spider veins. You should see the best results in weeks 6 – 8.
