About Varithena

Whether you have a single vein or multiple varicose veins that require medical treatment, Austin Vein Institute can help you find the right solution for your needs. As there are many strategies to combat varicose veins, our double board-certified vascular surgeon, Dr. Christopher Brennig, also offers Varithena (polidocanol injectable foam). When problems with the great saphenous vein (GSV) and other veins in the GSV system, Varithena can be injected to eliminate the symptoms related or caused by varicose veins. At our office in Austin, TX, Dr. Brennig can perform an evaluation of your veins to see how he can best treat your vascular condition. If Varithena is chosen, your appointment time should last no longer than an hour. Fast and effective, Varithena can be an effective treatment for men and women with varicose veins.

Best Candidates

As one of many options to treat large varicose veins in the legs, the choice to use this injectable foam is up to your doctor or vascular surgeon. Once you have had a consultation with Dr. Brennig, he will discuss all possible techniques and assist in the selection to make your treatment plan.

Treatment Details

Once you and Dr. Brennig have come to an agreement on your varicose vein removal approach, you will be seen in one of our treatment rooms. Varithena does not require a local anesthetic (like lidocaine) and may only cause slight discomfort. If you think that numbing the area will help you endure the injection, please review your options for pain management with Dr. Brennig. You will also not have to endure an incision or sedation, and the appointment should last no longer than an hour. This technique is very similar to getting a shot. The Varithena (a sclerosing foam) is injected into the vein to cause irritation the lining of the vein, which causes the vein to react, collapse, and close. Blood flow, where the vein was eliminated, will be improved and your leg will look better.

Recovery

Many of our patients at Austin Vein Institute do not report to having downtime or loss of the ability to do normal activities once they have had a Varithena injection. We do ask that you keep your follow-up appointments so that we can monitor your progress and check for problems, and wear your compression stockings regularly if prescribed. Dr. Brennig will want you to avoid strenuous activities like lifting weights or heavy exercise for a few weeks. Otherwise, you should not experience complications after treatment. We ask that you please call our office if you encounter difficulties. For more advanced varicose vein cases, you may require more than one injection appointment.
